good morning, alice. i need you to manage the e-book of "waking eyes." i thought you'd be the perfect person for the job. what? you're doing the "waking eyes" release? i totally identified with her, didn't you? oh my god. look at you. what are you doing here? i just finished my first draft of my newbook. so i'm here to deliver it. it's been far too long.

this is milan daneker. this is my daughter alice. hi. i would like to read your story. it's nothing. why don't you let me decide? why don't you just say... "hey, about that little thing that happened fifteen years ago that you never owned up to or apologized for like you should have?" it's my job. this is the new story. i'm not really sure about the ending

it's good. you made notes all over it. it only becomes real if you give me concrete details. you've written seven novels since "waking eyes." none has become the kind of cultural icon. how does a man in his forties perfectly capture the essence of a teenage girl? it's just something that i do. see that look in a guy's eyes like he wants me. the only thing that makes me feel real. your mother told me what you said.

you maybe misinterpreted something. it's perfectly natural to have feelings for someone who you look up to. i do this because i believe in your talent. i know. you were one of the few people who ever actually seemed to see me. it's a beautiful character. and i've been living in her shadow for fifteen years. you used me. "still she haunts me phantomwise..."

"alice moving under skies..." "never seen by waking eyes."

the old man and his grandson from grimms'fairy tales by jacob and wilhelm grimm translated by edgar taylor and marian edwardes.this librivox recording is in the public domain. read by bob neufeld. there was once a very old man, whose eyeshad become dim, his ears dull of hearing, his knees trembled, and when he sat at tablehe could hardly hold the spoon, and spilt the broth upon the table-cloth or let it runout of his mouth. his son and his son's wife were disgusted at this, so the old grandfatherat last had to sit in the corner behind the stove, and they gave him his food in an earthenwarebowl, and not even enough of it. and he used to look towards the table with his eyes fullof tears. once, too, his trembling hands could

not hold the bowl, and it fell to the groundand broke. the young wife scolded him, but he said nothing and only sighed. then theybrought him a wooden bowl for a few half-pence, out of which he had to eat.they were once sitting thus when the little grandson of four years old began to gathertogether some bits of wood upon the ground. 'what are you doing there?' asked the father.'i am making a little trough,' answered the child, 'for father and mother to eat out ofwhen i am big.' the man and his wife looked at each otherfor a while, and presently began to cry. then they took the old grandfather to the table, and henceforth always let him eat with them, and likewise said nothing if he did spilla little of anything.

hi, i'm julia drake, and i'm going to talkabout how to join a free romance book club. the first thing to consider, when joininga free romance book club, well, let's just say first, a romance book club, is what kindof romance, are you interested in? there is so much out there, from historical romance,to vampire romance, is really trendy right now, to pulp romance, danielle steele, suchthings, so you really have to, there's a range of possible ladies out there. the first placeto go, would be the romance writers association of america. they feature just every genreof romance, and have different book clubs, that you can join, and then also, there'sa number of publishers, who specialize in different kinds of romance, and so, and theirbook clubs are great, because they offer a

lot of discounts on their books, because theywant to get their material out there, and they also feature events with authors, soyou can meet your favorite romance author. the differences between a free book club, and a book club where you have to pay membership, is that in a free book club, it's free, butyou are responsible for buying your books, and it's not as structured, i'd say, versusa book club where you have to pay membership. you'll get a lot of discounts on books, butusually the way it works for your enrollment, you already have to purchase four to fivebooks, in order to actually participate in the discussion, and the discussion is set.there's a moderator that sets the discussion questions, so you're not as free in it, butyou get more discounts.

i'm jeanna rock and we're discussing ideasfor starting a book club. now, i'm assuming that you're going to organize your own bookclub because you haven't found one that really meets your needs. the first thing that youcan do is just to notify a few friends that you're interested in starting a book club.and let them invite people as well. make sure you let everyone know where you're going tomeet and when you're going to meet. and for the first discussion, i would suggest thatyou choose maybe some short stories that can be found on the internet and have some groupmembers read those short stories and discuss that. at that first meeting, make sure youhave a lot of food because that's one reach we do book group is for the food!! and also, discuss at that meeting where you want to

go with your book group, how you want to organizeit, how you want to choose books. so mainly your first meeting is just an organizationalmeeting with a little bit of discussion on a few short stories. after you've discussedwhat books you're going to read for your book group, contact your local book stores. i knowthat several of them have offered us a 20% discount if we buy our books there. but wemust register our book group with that store to get the 20% discount. also, you might wantto check your library as well. the orem city public library also carries quite a few booksavailable there for book groups. so you might want to check to see what books they haveavailable that you could check out as your group. also, looking at their book group listsmight even give you some suggestions on books

hi i'm laura from youngwritersworkshops.comand i'm going to talk about how to find a free on line book club and there are actuallya lot of on line book clubs out there and most of them are free so i guess the trickis finding the right one for you which might determine what kind of books you like to read, what level of interaction you are looking for and to think about if you would ratherdo a group that involves e-mails and getting a lot of e-mails or going to a board thatis on line and just reading the posts on the site. some of the places might be yahoo groupswhich is groups.yahoo.com. you're going to find a million groups there and there mightbe specialized groups that are about certain genre of literature that you are really interestedin and you might also go to the barnes and

noble site and they have a site specificallyabout their book clubs and you can join any number of clubs directly through that site.now another thing to think about is if there is a specific author that you are really interestedin reading a lot of their books they may actually have a book site of book clubs from the author'ssite so those are some things to think about when you are looking for an on line book club.using a search engine like google you could find a good resource or a few good sites thatactually compile a variety of sites on one page or you could go to yahoo groups or googlegroups and use their searches to find a group that will work for you. so do a little bitof research, look around, and i'm sure that you will find a good free on line book club.

there is one thing that you need to hearabove everything else. jesus died for you. despite everythingyou have done in your entire life, god loved you so much that he waswilling to send his only son down to the earth to live a perfect life and then die for you. what sort of crazy love is this? that aperfect god would give up his perfect son— so that people like you and me canbe redeemed? he paid the ransom for our sins, providing us a way of escape frometernal punishment.

he offered us a chance at life and life to the full. he offered us freedom in him. what did jesus do? he did everything. i want you to fully understand what thismeans. i want you to comprehend the cost involved, the torment he suffered, and theseparation from god he experienced. once you understand what he really did, you begin to understand what you are worth to him.

you begin to understand that his loveis unsurpassable. it is extravagant. glorious. perfect. you might say, "i don't deserve his love." nobody does. that's why it is a gift. despite our messed-up lives, we get toreceive god's love by accepting his son jesus christ as our lord and savior.

a lot of people will tell you that thereare many ways to be saved, but the truth is that salvation is only accomplished through the death and resurrection of jesus christ. yes, he died. but then he also rose again so that you and i might be forgiven of our sins and made alive in him. you want to find salvation? find jesus. you want to know what it is like to be set free? know jesus. this is the deciding moment. this is your chance to truly begin to seek god.

if you are thinking, "i have tried before andit just does not seem real to me. i feel like god is just an idea sitting outthere in space and he really doesn't have a lot of effect on my life." listen to me. if you have not experience the life-changing power of god, chances are you have never made jesusthe lord of your life. god is real. jesus is real. if you believe in him, he will changeyour life.

you will not be the same person anymore. you will be a new creation in him. romans 10:9 says, "that if you confess with your mouth jesus as lord, and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

there is one thing that you need to hearabove everything else. jesus died for you. despite everythingyou have done in your entire life, god loved you so much that he waswilling to send his only son down to the earth to live a perfect life and then die for you. what sort of crazy love is this? that aperfect god would give up his perfect son— so that people like you and me canbe redeemed? he paid the ransom for our sins, providing us a way of escape frometernal punishment.

he offered us a chance at life and life to the full. he offered us freedom in him. what did jesus do? he did everything. i want you to fully understand what thismeans. i want you to comprehend the cost involved, the torment he suffered, and theseparation from god he experienced. once you understand what he really did, you begin to understand what you are worth to him.

you begin to understand that his loveis unsurpassable. it is extravagant. glorious. perfect. you might say, "i don't deserve his love." nobody does. that's why it is a gift. despite our messed-up lives, we get toreceive god's love by accepting his son jesus christ as our lord and savior.

a lot of people will tell you that thereare many ways to be saved, but the truth is that salvation is only accomplished through the death and resurrection of jesus christ. yes, he died. but then he also rose again so that you and i might be forgiven of our sins and made alive in him. you want to find salvation? find jesus. you want to know what it is like to be set free? know jesus. this is the deciding moment. this is your chance to truly begin to seek god.

how the moon was created: a folktale from india. a very long time ago when the world was just created, the moon was not there, and the sun shone all the time! there was no concept of night as the sun never set. it was bright and sunny, and there was daylight all the time. people worked hard continuously and did not realize when to rest. one fine day, the

creator of the world visited the men in the fields while they were working. he asked one of the men: "when did you last water this field?" "today!" replied the sweating farmer. "and when did you dig the hole?""today," replied another man "when did you plant those trees in the garden?" "today, of course! it is day all the time, so everything was done today." the creator

then saw a woman with a small child and asked her: "when was your son born?""today," replied the woman. the creator then understood that the people of the world had no understanding of time! they would work all the time as they couldn't understand the division of day and night. he thought that he should do something about it. he then told the sun: "you must

shine all day and set in the evening and rise once again in the morning! people will then realize the difference between day and night! they will stop working when it becomes dark, and they'll get some rest." the sun readily agreed. when it became evening, the sun went down quietly. suddenly, everything became dark! everyone got scared with the abrupt darkness. they

panicked and ran here and there--some stumbled upon each other and some hurt themselves by falling into ditches! people were not used to this, and so they did not realize what to do about it. finally the leaders and the elders realized that nothing could be done in the darkness, so they told everyone: "please, lie down. take some rest, and you

shall work again when it becomes bright." when the sun came up the next morning, everyone woke up and started working. thus, from then on, night became the time for resting. people started living more happily and comfortably, as they were well-rested, but one problem persisted. it became completely dark after sunset, so the people could not see anything at all!

they would often bang against the trees and hurt themselves by hitting against rocks and falling into ditches. they also broke things, as they couldn't see where they were kept. after some days, the creator visited them once again and asked them: "are you happy now?" "yes, we are! we sleep all night and wake up fresh to work the next morning!"

replied a man, "but there is still one problem... we cannot see anything in the dark! we tend to hurt each other and break a lot of things. can we at least have the sun for some time?" asked the man. the creator thought about this for some time and replied "no, you can't, but don't worry! i shall give you something else! something more soothing and less bright

than the sun. you can see things and still sleep peacefully in its presence." then he created the moon. the people were extremely happy, as they could see at night and did not hurt themselves anymore. they slept peacefully in the light of the moon and woke up the next day when the sun shone brightly. thus the moon was created <3

sage is a 12-year-old labrador dog whose owners live in the state of washington. and there was a day on which sage went missing, which was bad enough news all by itself. but in the area there had recently been sightings of mountain lions and so the family was worried that something was going to happen to sage. and in addition, sage is blind. sage can't see anything. so the family, and the friends, and neighbors,

they went out searching for sage but they didn't find sage. and so they called in professional dog trackers who searched for sage for two days. but even the dog trackers didn't find sage. and then three days went by and still no sign of sage. and then five days. and seven days and still no sign. finally, on the eighth day, a neighbor named dan was out hiking in the woods.

and he came up to a little peak of a hill and he looked off in the distance and he saw what looked to be sage laying down on the ground near a small stream of water. as dan ran toward sage, he was thinking, "how am i going to break the news to sage's family that, that sage, that sage is no longer, that sage is no longer alive." but, but thankfully, as dan got closer to sage, sage lifted up her head and showed that that she was alive,

just barely, but she was alive. and sage survived. dan carried sage on his shoulders all the way back and brought, uh, and brought that happy news back to the family. and sage was home again. there might be times in life, no matter how old you are, times in life when you feel maybe like sage did during those eight days in the woods. days when you feel lost

or alone. there might be days when you open your eyes and you just can't see anything good happening. there might be days when you are wandering through the woods of life and you wonder if you're going to survive. but even if that's true, even if that's the case for you, god still gives us the right to believe and expect that we will survive. in the book of 2 corinthians, the apostle paul reminds us of a very important principle

that christians get to walk through life believing. he says this. he says, in other words, we don't have to go through life opening our eyes and expecting to see good things in order to know that we're going to be okay, that we're going to survive. we simply need to live by faith in a jesus who didn't wonder if he was going to survive.

he knew that he wouldn't. jesus wasn't blind to what was going on around him. he saw the whip. he saw the nails. he felt their pain. he felt their sting. and though he could have avoided it and run away and been done with it and never felt it, he didn't. and why?

because he really wanted to give you something to believe in. a god who will stick by your side, even if doing so kills him. and a savior who would rise from the dead on easter morning just to show you that he really can keep a promise to take you to the one place where there is no more death, and no more pain, and no more wandering. and where every last tear is wiped away. thank you for letting me spend some time with you

around the word of god this week. there are so many souls out there that need to see on a regular basis the savior that we're so blessed to be able to have faith in. and you can help us reach those souls by becoming a grace partner. consider setting up a reoccurring gift to this ministry. you can find out more information by clicking on the link in this post. prayerfully consider it. god's blessings on your weekend and we look forward to seeing you next week.

hi, my name is luz luis. i work for the nationalkidney foundation, and i'd like to give you some tips about how to donate your car incalifornia. the first and most important thing is to find your charity. choose a charitythat is in your state. if you find their phone number, either in the phone book or on theinternet make sure that the charity is located near you and benefits local programs. askthat charity what their overhead is. you never want to donate to a charity whose overheadis more than twenty five percent. ask them if they accept car donations, and then getthe phone number and the web address of their car processing center directly from the charity.make sure that the proceeds from the sale of your vehicle come to the charity, at leastseventy five percent. again, you never want

to donate to some of the organizations thatcome out of the newspaper, or on the internet that are giving five to ten percent of thesale proceeds of your vehicle to those charities. so again, be in contact with the charity.make sure how, ask the charity themselves how they accept the car donations. make surethat the money is going to programs that you care to benefit, and then donate through theirphone number and their website. the other most important thing is about the title. you'regoing to have to find the title of the vehicle before you begin the donation process. makesure that the title is signed over directly to the charity that you want to benefit. neverleave a title open. so, you sign to release your ownership of the car, date your signature, and then write, as the new owner or the buyer,

the name of the charitable organization thatyou'd like to benefit. as for donating to the kidney foundation, it's very simple. youcall 1-800-488-cars, or donate online at kidneycars.org. again, you submit the information, they takethe information about who gets the tax receipt, information about the vehicle; year, make, and model, what's wrong with the car. they instruct you how to sign the title, and thenonce they have the information they'll come out and get the car, and then you can usea tax receipt for your taxes. you can write it off as a tax deduction.

paul: i love the way oral roberts used to put it. i was in his medical school, at oru's medical school. he said, "join the healing hands of medicine with the healing hands of prayer." and i just think that is the most beautiful combination because when people come to me, i'll operate on them, i'll do whatever i can do to help them. but i don't want them necessarily to put their faith in me.

they have to put their faith in god who's behind me, who is the healer. but i can tell you when you join those two, when there's a faith and a hope, and an optimism, and a--and even you preach a series on there's delivering faith and sustaining faith. sometimes, going through illnesses, you have to have that sustaining faith god's with you. people that join those two hands together, they do better. they recover quicker, they live longer.

you know what? i can just tell you they do better.

hi, my name is molly mackey and i’m withexpert village. the next would be moving on from the absolute worst, would be a fair conditionbook and believe it or not, even a book with split covers, this could be considered fair, because of its age and its decorative value. next we want a good book, which is “g”or “good” and that’s the terminology for that. that would be something possiblywith just maybe some creased covers, it would make a really good reading copy but it’sreally not collectible. next we would go onto “very good” which is a nice copy, it’sgot you know, no major flaws, the pages are bright, looks pretty good. that would be a“vg” or “very good” copy. and lastly we have “fine” and a fine book shouldbe like brand new, there should be no major

flaws, no minor flaws, no makings, no ownernames it should be just like you purchased it off the shelf to be considered “fine”.

hi community of awesome! i'm ava jae, and thisis bookishpixie. so writing, especially writing over a longperiod of time, can become pretty stressful. most writers are not in a position where theycan write full time, which means they have to juggle their writing with other life responsibilities. this means that a lot of free time that wouldusually be spent relaxing tends to be spent writing. whether it's another full-time job, or a bunchof part-time jobs, school, family, or a combination thereof, writers are busy people. and i'm not saying that using the time thatother people would use to relax for writing

is a bad thing because that's how writersget things done. but if you're not careful, you can very easilyburn yourself out. confession: i don't write every day. at least, not in the sense of writing fora book every day. i am what i like to call a binge writer, inthat when i'm working on a project, whether it's first drafting or revising, i will workon it every single day and put in all the free hours that i have until that projectis done. but when i'm done, i take a break. the break, for me, is important because ifi were to do one work binge after another

without stopping, i would burn out. and trust me, the last thing you want to dois work yourself into the ground. my breaks can last anywhere from a coupledays to a couple weeks to even over a month. during that break i will not think about theproject i was working on and i will try not to think about future projects, i just readand catch up on my netflix queue, and hulu, and play assassin's creed and civilization,and...relax. because the truth is if you don't take careof yourself, then your writing is going to suffer. you have to figure out a work and relax balancethat works for you. maybe that will mean binging on work likeme and taking a long break.

or maybe that will mean spreading out yourwork more gradually and taking breaks throughout. there isn't really a right or wrong way todo this, as long as you continue progressing forward while also giving yourself some timeto recover. because the last thing you want to do is writeuntil you dread writing, or on the flip side, put off your work for so long that you'renot making any progress at all. just remember your writing is important, butso are you. and if you prioritize writing over your mental, and emotional, and physical health, ultimately both you and your writing are going to suffer. so write because writing is awesome, but rememberto take a break, too.

so that's all i've got for today! if you likedwhat you saw, don't forget to subscribe and comment, and i'll see you guys next week!

well, at the foundation where we work on infectious disease, there'll be meetings where people say, "oh, did gut bacteria affect this? or there's a bacteria in this insect." and sue, who's the ceo of the foundation found this book and came in and handed me a copy and said, "oh, this really shows the landscape of this amazing phenomenon of how microbes are such a key part of all life forms." that’s right. so i went to this germ-free facility where they raise mice in these sterile bubbles. those mice do not contain multitudes. they've never seen bacteria in their lives. and because of that their bodies did unexpected things like their bones and their blood vessels don't develop in the right way

if they don't encounter the right microbial signals. one thing we work on you describe is this idea that wolbachia lives inside insects. and in the case of the aedes aegypti mosquito can actually reduce its ability to be disease-carrying. the idea that we might be able to control all these diseases by implanting wolbachia into the aedes aegypti mosquito just blows my mind. and wolbachia when it was first discovered was ignored. it took a lot of time before people realized that it had the potential to influence human health in such a positive way. the microbiome is very much like that. long ignored and now only recently appreciated.

i think the last place i would have expected any microbiome connection is a neurological disease like parkinson's. there's so many interesting links between the microbiome and the gut and brain and behavior. i think the microbiome provides this connective tissue that links all of our organ systems together and it influences the way we think; the way we behave. the idea of organisms that are microscopic changing the way we think feels kind of deeply unsettling. and yet, there it is. the fact that it stays under control, i find it amazing how complex the microbiome is and would not have expected this.

yeah, absolutely. and that's the kind of grander view of life that i wanted to get across in the book. that, you know, with you and i sitting here as two individuals, but actually we're two entire worlds. hey, thanks ed, it's great to have you here. thank you for having me. it's been fantastic.

court to review his case. huguely is serving 23 years in prison. books for students in a school district that's facing shortages, but that did not stop someone from dumping thousands of books that had been removed from a baltimore city school

that was scheduled to close. 11 news reporter lowell melser joins us. lowell, is the school district defending its dumping decision? well, the funny thing is, it's hard to get any information in the -- out of the school district in the first place.

we know the following. heritage high school closed its doors. the school principal ordered all the books copyrighted by 1999 to be recycled. according to some city councilmembers, old and new books were thrown out, despite

their efforts to try and save them. i didn't know shakespeare got old. i didn't know algebra changes. for this owner of terra cafe, it was the shock of a lifetime. he and his friend found that thousands of the textbooks,

everything from the classics to math and science textbooks were being thrown out. our intentions with the books were to recycle the books into the communities. when they were there, they were told no. they noticed thousands of what

looks like new books in a recycle and trash dumpster. we were put out of the school, questioned who we were and what were our intentions. they reached out to councilmembers, including carl stokes, who was outraged. she's books, first of all,

are in good shape. second of all, they're not outdated. stokes says he witnessed a garbage truck take away all of the books. they had any idea that the books railroad were in the dumpster.

a disgruntled employee dumped all the new books to make the principal and the system look bad. it would be bad physically for one person to discard that many books. no way, says stokes. we reached out to school

officials fer officials who would only community through e-mail. they would not tell us where the books are now and why they wouldn't let dixon and childs take the books in the first place. we understand from teachers in

the scoorl that there are still plenty of books inside the school that could be saved and not thrown out. chairman stokes says he's going to try to save the books and get them in the right hands.
