just yesterday we reported that jcpenney's is closing 138 stores nationwide. in contrast amazon opened the first brick and mortar bookstore. we explain what is different about the new bookstore and why the traditional ones are still
relevant.reporter: call it a tale of two stores, new and shiny, old and comfortable. even the sounds are different. digital. right now in chicago it is 52 degrees. reporter: versus durable. amazon opened their first walk
up bookstore in lakeview. while it may look like a regular bookstore, let's just say you should not judge a book by its cover. we decided we would give the books more space, but the cover out. reporter: every book sits
under light with the book cover facing out. every book in the store has a rating of 4.5 or higher. we tried to use the data that we have, we collect the data from our book club to help you find great books. i like it.
i think it is a fun browse. it will not have everything you want but it is fun to walk around and discover.reporter: one thing you will not discover is the old bookstore smell. i don't smell it anymore. people often comment. reporter: they have been in
business 35 years and they say business is thriving. especially in big cities like chicago enough people appreciate selection and personal service, things that are not exclusively based on algorithms. reporter: while new moves in
old is here to stay. at the heart of them both is books. mr. sandmeyer says the store prides themselves on cooking and children's sections. one new feature of the amazon store they have a section of
the store called page turner. those are books that kindle readers finished in three days or less. if you don't want to think about what you will read next go to the page turner section and pick up that book. i don't know about you i have a
space in my life for both stores i appreciate both. no doubt about that. amazon has taken over the world when it comes to books. there is still a place for old- school. and a digital versus turning pages.
